Community Guidelines

Welcome to the Schumacher Network.

The network is for anyone who wants to be part of a community exploring transformative learning and sustainable living. These guidelines are here to help create an inclusive, safe space for all members - where you can connect, collaborate, share and learn. Do you think these guidelines could be improved? We will be holding a space for reflection on the guidelines and rules in the website.

There are two sections to this page:

  • The Guidelines
  • Community Rules

The Guidelines

The Schumacher Network is co-created by you

The Schumacher College alumni came up with the idea, and crowdfunded it. It’s continuing to grow from those roots, being built organically from the ground-up. Schumacher Network members collaborate with the college to form the shape, vision and direction of the network. Please do get involved!

Schumacher College is the network’s custodian

The network grew from Schumacher College’s alumni, and the college now supports the community by running the network as an independent initiative. In future - if the community support it, more like-minded custodians may participate to support the community’s visions. But whatever happens, your personal data will never be shared with the college, or with anyone else.

Self-organise, sustain and act mindfully

If you have an idea for the network, please share it, make it happen and invite people to join you. Everyone can support the network by taking care to post accurate, thoughtful information, that’s clearly tagged and categorised so that the content can easily be found by other members.

Be fair, relevant and please don’t spam

Please don’t advertise, spam, or mass message people. If you see anything that’s unclear, problematic, spammy, or breaks the guidelines, contact the Community Facilitator at community@schumachercollege.org.uk.

We have more in common than can separate us

And our differences are ultimately our richest sources of strength. There may be passionate disagreements, misunderstanding and compromise. We all do our bit to understand one another’s perspectives. As a community we understand collaboration is messy - and it’s worth it.

The Community Facilitator will act as needed to benefit the whole community - this is an inclusive space. The community facilitator will engage with anything or anyone who is willfully and repeatedly seeking to undermine this inclusivity, or who is breaking the terms and conditions by making personal attacks, abuse, or trolling.

Community Rules

We value warmth, and freedom of speech in our digital space very highly. Likewise we don't want this website to be a place for trolls, spammers or bullies. We hope to foster a safe, open, friendly space where everyone feels free to express their opinions on the issues that matter to them.

These guidelines outline a no nonsense boundary between what is and isn't acceptable on this website, and what will happen if it is crossed. We don't expect to refer to them much, but if we do, we want it to be clear.

Schumacher College cannot be held responsible for content found on this website. Any message posted in these areas expresses only the view of the author and should not be held to reflect Schumacher College's own views.

1. Responsible/appropriate use

In joining our discussions or writing blogs, or commenting on any content, you are agreeing that you will not use this website to post material, or links to material, which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, harmful, inaccurate, abusive, extremist, hateful, harassing, obscene, threatening, racially offensive, lewd, pornographic, in violation of intellectual property rights, rights of confidentiality, or rights of privacy, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law. You must not post messages that are vulgar, crude, sexist, racist, homophobic or otherwise discriminatory and/or offensive.

Always treat other members with respect.

  • Please refrain from swearing, dragging conversations off-topic or holding personal conversations in general discussions.
  • Please do not post anything which some people may find distressing, such as images/videos of graphic violence.

Members must create and use a secure password and must not share this password with anyone else.

2. Your copyrights

You can read about this in the Terms and Conditions. Your data and the content you add belong to you and you are protected with respect by the General Data Protection Regulation.

3. Our liability

Schumacher College disclaims any liability with regard to this online activity and any actions resulting from your participation.

Any message posted here expresses only the views of the author of the message and does not necessarily reflect our views or that of any other person on the forum.

You, the user, agree that you are solely responsible for the content of your messages.

Please note that failure to remove particular material does not constitute an endorsement or acceptance of it by us.

4. Copyright of other material

Do not include any copyright material without the express permission of the copyright holder. Schumacher College does not accept liability for copyright breaches you commit, and will remove any offending entries.

5. External links

Please only provide links to relevant and appropriate websites. We class as inappropriate any sites with racist, pornographic or sexually explicit material, potentially defamatory material, anything which encourages illegal activities, material which infringes copyright, sites which purely plug or promote commercial products, or sites which may offend other users. All such links will be removed.

We will not be held responsible for the availability or content of any external websites or material you access through our site. If you decide to visit any linked site, you do so at your own risk and it is your responsibility to take all protective measures to guard against viruses or other destructive elements.

We do not endorse and are not responsible or liable for any content, advertising, products, services or information on or available from third party websites or material.

6. Advertising, promotional and commercial material

You are welcome to add your events to the events listings as long as they are pertinent to the community.

Advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are unacceptable and will be removed. Anyone posting URLs of sites excessively or in a way which could be construed as advertising are liable to have their posts, and right to post removed.

We may introduce a listings feature (e.g. Right Livelihood postings) in the future, and will hold open consultations when the time comes.

7. Your behaviour

Please do not spam or flood the comments and discussion areas. Don't post the same comment to more than one conversation or more than once.

This is known as 'ranting and raving' and really puts people off. Imagine we are in a big room together and someone is standing on a table and going on and on about one topic, again and again? This is what we mean, and we will ask that person to change their behaviour.

Please avoid off-topic material especially in subject specific areas.

Please respect other users. If your contribution to blogs or discussions makes other users of the service feel uncomfortable, or we receive repeated complaints about your behaviours we reserve the right to revoke your entitlement to use the Service and to block your account as set out under item 8.

8. If you break these rules

If you fail to abide by these rules, you will receive an email warning. If you do not receive this warning because you have not provided us with a current email address, this cannot be accepted as an excuse for continuing to break the rules, as it is a condition of site membership that you have supplied us with a valid and current email address. If you continue to break the rules after a second warning, we will suspend your account.

We will remove any objectionable material without prior contact with the author. We reserve the right to edit, move or delete any messages for any reason.

We reserve the right to terminate your registration if you break any of these rules. For more information on blogging and your content on our sites please refer to the Terms and Conditions

If you believe that a posted message is objectionable

Please contact us on community@schumachernetwork.org immediately.

If a formal complaint is made against you, we reserve the right to suspend your account and only reinstate it if the complaint is resolved.
